2013-2014 WELFARE AND SECURITY COMMITTEE

Annual Report

Members of the Committee: Al Concord, Andrew Hardin, Linda Harley, Andrew Howard, Margaret Kosal (Chair), Erick Maxwell

Executive Board Liaison: Chris Downing

Invited Ex officio Guests: Mark Demyanek (Facilities) and Robert Connolly & Bradley Latham (GT Police)

The Committee met on the following dates: 23 September 2013, 21 October 2013, 25 November 2013, 15 January 2014, 26 February 2014, and 16 April 2014

The committee continued its historic interest in pedestrian safety on campus. As in past years, we discussed long-standing areas of concern: the lack of crosswalks at heavily used places on and adjacent to campus, which are used as ad hoc pedestrian crossings. The Committee discussed options, including technology-enabled approaches, to doing an updated campus cross-walk survey.

In an effort to better understand the Institute’s plans for increasing the walkability of campus, Howard Wertheimer, director GT Capital Planning and Space Management, briefed the Committee on the campus master plan.

The Committee was contacted directly regarding concerns about lack of transportation assistance or accommodation for temporarily disabled staff and students.

The Committee voted to support implementation of an updated bicycle policy for campus.

The Committee was briefed on changes to the Faculty senate Structure and potential implications for Standing Committees and membership.

Representatives of the GT police department regularly briefed the Committee on the state of on-campus and near-campus crime. It was noted that crime rates overall are down.
