Academic Matters

  1. A motion was made to approve a request from the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering for a degree modification.  The motion was seconded and approved.

Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering

The 2-credit LCC 3401, Tech Communication Practices, is no longer available for Fall 2010. The new 3-credit LCC 3403, Tech Communication, will not have concrete contents to serve ISyE's technical writing needs soon enough.

·         ISyE requests to replace 2 credit hours (LCC 3401) with 2 credit hours of Free Electives.

·         ISyE will revisit the issue after LCC develops a concrete syllabus for LCC 3403.

ISyE has a Workforce Communications Lab with one full time director and several assistants to assist students in developing and practicing the delivery of their presentations. The senior design coordinator and advisors work as a team to help the students with technical writing skills and in other aspects of technical communications. During the 2008 ABET review, evaluators cited the ISyE senior design as a strength.

ISyE’s UCC has worked with LCC diligently for over one semester.  However, a concrete syllabus cannot be developed in time for the IUCC meeting on March 23, 2010. ISyE will revisit the issue after the syllabus of the new LCC course is developed and offered a few times.

ISyE’s Student Curriculum Committee is supportive of this change.

LCC has started a Communications Lab on March 10, 2010. The senior design coordinator has requested that students sign up for its service. The “in-situ” learning may be effective. The senior design coordinator will monitor its effectiveness.

ISyE has also worked with LCC on English 1102. We have explored if a technical paper assignment can be added to the class.

Current Program of Study

Action to Take

Proposed Program of Study

BSIE requires LCC 3401 Tech Comm Practice, 2 credits

Remove the requirement

Adding 2 credit of free elective

These courses changes do not change the total number of degree program credit hours.

  1. A motion was made to approve a request from the School of Materials Science and Engineering for a course substitute.  The motion was seconded and approved.

In prelude to merging the BS curricula in MSE and PFE, MSE is requiring its seniors to take senior design next fall with PTFE 4110 (Polymer & Fiber Engineering Design I; (2-3-3)).  This single course will substitute for both MSE 4021 (Designing with Materials; (1-0-1)) and MSE 4022 (Designing with Materials II; (0-6-2)).

MSE students will register for MSE 4803D (CRN 90887) in the fall.

PTFE is fully on board with this plan.
